And in Benin City, America has kept her promise. Yesterday, a prominent museum in America returned looted Benin artefacts to the king of Benin. Benin is an ancient city tucked into mid-west zone of Nigeria, West Africa.
In 1897, about December, the British invaded Benin and raped the palace after deposing Oba Ovoranwen, exiling him to Calabar. The British soldiers went on rampage in the palace taking away works of bronze, ivory and every item of value.
These stolen items were taken back to Europe where they were auctioned and preserved in several museums in Europe and the Americas. Meanwhile, the palace has been agog with celebration of the long awaited return of the artefacts.
And in Benin, the ancient city was tense in anticipation of artefacts. The outgoing governor ObaseKi was also at the reception for this historical return. Furthermore, the chief press secretary of the Omo n’oba invited all true citizens of Benin and their well- wishes to witness the occasion.
